The Gates Family Cookie Quest: Recipes We Live For

February 4, 2026 By David Gates

Heads up! This article contains affiliate links. If you choose to purchase a similar product through one of the links below, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. I only recommend products I genuinely use or would recommend.

Mom's Recipes

For as long as I can remember, the smell of browning butter and toasted oats meant one thing: Mom was in the kitchen, and the holidays had officially arrived. In the Gates household, cookies aren’t just snacks—they are milestones.

Note: This is a living list! I’m working my way through Mom’s recipe box one cookie at a time. Bookmark this page and check back every so often as I unlock new recipes!

The Mission

I’ve embarked on a lifelong “Baking Quest” to master every single recipe in my mother’s legendary holiday rotation. From vintage 1960s cookbooks to handwritten index cards and Grandma’s secret Italian traditions, this list is the roadmap of my childhood.

As I master each recipe, I’ll be updating this post with a link to the full guide and my personal tips. Stick around—it’s going to be a delicious ride.

The Master Cookie List

Use the categories below to find your favorites!

🍪 The “Big Five” (Family Favorites)

  • Oatmeal Butterscotch – David’s aka Fuzzy Monkey’s Favorite. Adapted from a classic from the 1996, Quaker Oats Favorite Recipe Collection – Celebrating 120 Years of Great Tasting Family Classics.

  • Fudge Balls – Betsy’s Favorite. A vintage 1969 Pillsbury Family Cookbook staple. Recipe adapted from The Pillsbury Family Cook Book Hardcover  – January 1, 1969.

  • Gingerbread Men – Chrissy’s Favorite. The ultimate holiday classic. Betty Crocker Recipe from mom’s collection.

  • Raspberry Squares – Dad’s Favorite. A buttery, jam-filled classic that holds the top spot on his list.

  • Italian Fig Cookies (Cuccidati) – Mom’s Favorite. (Moving this up from the Heritage collection since it’s her personal pick!)

🇮🇹 The Italian Heritage Collection

  • Traditional Italian Cookies – Straight from Mom’s index card archives.

  • Sesame Cookies (Reginelle) – A deep-rooted family legacy.

  • Pizzelles – Delicate, crisp, and nostalgic.

  • Biscotti Trio: Biscotti Toscani Almond Biscotti (Biscotti Lou Seibert Pappas), Chocolate Biscotti (2009 Parade Magazine), and Cranberry Biscotti.

🍫 Rich, Fudgy & No-Bake Wonders

  • Buckeyes – Peanut butter and chocolate perfection.

  • Magic Bars & 7-Layer Cookies – The gooey, decadent crowd-pleasers.

  • Muddy Buddies – A crunchy, powdered-sugar-covered addiction.

  • Peanut Butter Fudge & Chocolate Fudge – Classic countertop staples.

  • Chow Mein Clusters – A sweet-and-salty “AllRecipes” find Mom added to the vault.

🎄 Festive Classics & Holiday Shapes

  • Classic Corn Flake Wreaths – A vintage gem from the Wisconsin Electric Power Company Cooky Book. Our most popular pin and recipe.

  • Pecan Crescents – A buttery, nutty favorite. Interestingly, our family recipe came right off the packaging of a Wilton cookie sheet!
  • Sugar Cutouts – The Better Homes and Gardens recipe we all grew up decorating.

  • Spritz & Pecan Crescents – Buttery, delicate, and beautiful on a platter.

  • Raspberry & Apricot Kolaczki – Traditional jam-filled delights.

🥣 The “Pantry” Favorites

  • Oatmeal Raisin – The ultimate classic. A classic from the 1996 Quaker Oats Favorite Recipe Collection – Celebrating 120 Years of Great Tasting Family Classics.
  • Rice Krispy Treats – The classic box recipe.

  • Popcorn Balls – My own early design! A twist on the Krispy treat using popcorn.

  • Snickerdoodles & M&M Cookies – Simple, reliable, and kid-approved.

  • Lemon Bars – Tart, sweet, and sourced from Mom’s handwritten cards.

🍪 The Modern & Gourmet Classics

  • White Chocolate Macadamia Nut – The ultimate “bakery-style” treat. Creamy, crunchy, and a total crowd-pleaser.

  • Ghirardelli Chocolate Chip – The gold standard for chocolate lovers, following the classic Ghirardelli recipe.

  • M&M Cookies – Bright, colorful, and a favorite for the kids (and the young at heart!).

  • Peanut Butter Large Kiss – The perfect marriage of salty peanut butter and a solid chocolate centerpiece.

Is there a recipe your family can’t live without? I’m still working my way through Mom’s index cards (and hunting down those long lost secrets!), so stay tuned for the next update in the Fuzzy Monkey Kitchen.
