A Grocery Insider’s Perspective: 13 Years with the Keurig K70 Platinum

January 21, 2026 By David Gates

Heads up! This article contains affiliate links. If you choose to purchase a similar product through one of the links below, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. I only recommend products I genuinely use or would recommend.

Working in the grocery industry, I’ve spent more time in the backroom and the aisles than just about anyone. I’m the one breaking down the pallets and stocking the shelves, so I see exactly which coffee brands people are obsessed with and which products have the staying power. While my store doesn’t sell the brewing machines themselves, I’ve spent the last decade plus putting one of the industry’s most iconic models to work in my own kitchen: the Keurig Model K70-5. I felt it was about time to paid tribute to this in inanimate object and reflect how much of a part of my lift it has played.

If the time has come to simplify your life or change up your coffee routine, might I suggest a Keurig machine for your own kitchen? Looking for your next Keurig machine, start shopping now!

The Unboxing: A 2013 Flashback

I still have the photos from the day I brought this machine home back in 2013. Looking at that original box brings back memories of when the K70 was “all the rage” and king of the coffee aisle. As a long-time coffee drinker I can tell you that the simplicity of this older K70 is wonderful. It certainly changed up my morning coffee routine and has for over a decade, and is still going strong.

The Stock Boy’s Secret: The Kirkland ConnectionOne thing you learn when you’re stocking shelves is that the “fancy” labels aren’t always the ones people are buying in bulk. Even though I’m surrounded by coffee options at work, I have a personal favorite that I always keep in my own pantry: Organic Pacific Gold. It’s marketed under the Kirkland Signature brand at Costco. From a value perspective, this is the gold standard. It’s a consistent, high-quality organic brew that holds its own against any of the premium name-brand K-cups I stack on the shelves daily. If you’re looking for a “backroom tip” for a solid daily drinker, this is the one I personally vouch for.

The Maintenance Hack: Skipping the “Filter Trap”

In the retail world, we stock a lot of “consumables”—those small parts like replacement filters that companies want you to buy forever. Many machines have a built-in filter at the bottom of the water tank that is a hassle to swap and an extra cost you don’t really need.

Early on, I figured out a way to beat that system: Skip the internal filter entirely. Since I have a filtered “drinking water” tap at my kitchen sink, I use that to fill the tank. By using pre-filtered water, I’ve kept this K70 running for over a decade without having to order or replace a single part. To date, I haven’t had to fix a thing—though I might be cursing myself by finally putting that in writing!

A Reliable Companion Through Every Shift

After thirteen years of early-morning shifts, this machine has been a tank. It’s seen me through countless “before-work” coffees and late-night resets. It’s catered to my changing tastes—from the simple medium roasts of my early experiences to the bold, and all those flavored treats promoted out there today, to the savory dark roasts I prefer today, like this Kirkland Organic Pacific Bold.

While I know that no machine lasts forever, I’m confident that with proper care, my Keurig will continue to serve me well. This older model K70-5 has proven that you can get incredible longevity out of your kitchen gear.

The Insider’s Final Verdict

Whether you are looking to save money on your morning routine or you just want a brewer that won’t give up on you after a year, the Keurig K70 remains a testament to what a well-maintained machine can do.

Shop My Coffee Station Favorites:

  • My Go-To Morning Brew: [Kirkland Signature Organic Pacific Gold K-Cups] – The best dark roast I’ve found in a decade in my opinion.

  • The Modern Version of My Machine: [Keurig Models] – If my K70 ever finally retires, I’d have to shop around again. I hope this isn’t soon.

  • Eco-Friendly Option: [Reusable K-Cup Filter] – Perfect for when you want to use your own local grocery store grinds. In order to use up some old coffee these come in handy. I used these in the early days and they come in handy.
